Tonight, I had fun at Vocabulary.com, where I learned that I don’t know nearly as many words as I thought I did! On Vocabulary.com, take free vocabulary quizzes or assign quizzes to your students. Answer a question, and if you’re wrong, you’ll read a definition of the word and you’ll later review that word again. Answer the question correctly, and you’ll move on to other words!
My favorite feature, as a homeschool teacher, is that I can assign my students to paste a text into Vocabulary.com and the program suggests words that could be studied. When I input text from the Bill of Rights, I was suddenly not as good as I thought I was at vocabulary! This is a great way to make sure your children are understanding a text.
Below is a description of the program from the developers:
Vocabulary.com is a new FREE site that’s focused on teaching vocabulary in a way that keeps kids engaged. Students don’t study at Vocabulary.com, they play The Challenge, a game that rewards vocabulary learning and effort. It’s also adaptive; the site offers more than 120,000 questions to teach more than 10,000 words, so it chooses words and questions based on how you perform over time. With The Challenge, if you miss a word, we keep working with you until you master it.
