The anniversary of the Gulf Oil Spill is April 20th. We live in an area of the Gulf Coast directly impacted by that spill, so we had quite a roller-coaster summer last year. Happily, I can tell you that a year later, we don't see any effect of the oil spill. There is no oil on the beaches and our wildlife (including the tourists! =D) is as active as normal. Dawn, the dishwashing soap company that helped clean our Brown Pelicans last year, has partnered with Discovery Education to create lesson plans on oil spills, specifically on these topics:
- Investigate Oil Spills Lesson Plan
- Discover Wildlife Rehabilitation Lesson Plan
- Save the Wildlife Lesson Plan
How to Get this Freebie: Visit this Dawn Junior Wildlife Champions page. The lesson plans are downloadable as pdf files (almost 10 pages each), and in English or Espanol.
For Grades 3-5, especially, but I'd adapt them for all elementary students, and even my older ones.
How to Get a Freebie in Your Snail Mail: I have no idea what they'll mail us, but Dawn – and the Marine Mammal Center – will send you a gift "for your classroom" for filling out a survey about the lesson plans. Look for this graphic on the Dawn Junior Wildlife Champions page (lower right of that page). Quantities Limited.
